The custom of writing the Pharaoh's name inside the Cartouche represented his rule over the universe.Over the past 7000 years the Cartouche has become a universal symbol of long life, good luck and protection from evil.

The Cartouche has a long lasting legend that dates back over 5000 years ago…. It was believed by the Pharaohs that the design of the Cartouche would protect them in their travels. Each Cartouche had the name of the person wearing it written in Egyptian Hieroglyphics King Tut... Ramses... Nefertiti... Cleopatra. In ancient Egypt, every royal person had a cartouche (pronounced "kar-toosh")--a unique hieroglyphic nameplate imbued with good fortune and the power to ward off evil spirits.
